crackling sounds in my neck...

hey....i am 22 and have been suffering from chronic crackling noise in my neck since like 3 years whenever i move my neck...i have intermittent attacks of occipital headache every now and then (but not all the time), often precipitated by stress or exams...or oversleeping...i dont know if it's related but it has been since 3 years too......my symptoms started when i had this trauma over the back of my headache in a car accident...but it wasnt persistent...and it didnt appear immediately after the accident...it started after 6 months....with the occipital headache first then the crackling noises....I dont know if I should worry or should consult a doctor...i have seen a neurologist before and my neuro. examination was all fine...I havent suffer from any other related symptoms like parathesiea, or numbness or tingling,or weakness in my extremities....please tell me what to do...
thanks alot for your time...

I can only tell you that I have had that crackling noise in my neck for years, and its due to Arthritis.  I have had degnerative disc disease in my back for many years also.  Arthritis just sets into those joints, especially if you ever had a injury to your back.  I have had x-rays , and was always told its degenerative changes going on.  Most likely its from the accident you were in.  My daughter was only 16 and a passenger in a vehicle when she hurt her hip and back years ago.  The first thing the doctor said to her was that she would get Arthritis.  Now she is 37, and sure enough its Arthritis that settled in her hip and back.
Try to exercise and keep the joints moving whenever you can.

I would love to know, if you get any answers. I'm 32 years old and have the same problem. I'm afraid it may be due to an "air guitar" show I did when I was a drinker. I had whiplash for 4 days. My neck has the crackling noises and I can feel them as well. My neck also feels weak, especially where it goes up into the skull. My email is ***@****. Good luck and LMK if you find anything out!

A significant trauma to the head can result in the symptoms you are experiencing. The vertebrae in the neck can begin to deteriorate over time and develop arthritic type changes.  My recommendation is to be evaluated by a physician and have cervical spine x-rays done.  Further treatment can be determined based on the x-ray findings.
Best wishes ---
