fusion or replacement dilemma

fusion or replacement dilemma

Hello there,
I have herniated discs at L4 / L5 and L3 is ropey.
I also have herniated disc at shoulder blade level too.

I have been offered a fusion of L4/L5 but I am worried as the disc to be fused to is considered by the surgeon to be 'ropey' but they are still offering to fuse the other two to it. This worries me as I am sure this will cause the disc to get ropier and herniate completely with the strain of the other 2 discs fused to it.
My surgeon says that they only ever fuse 2 discs and cannot offer any more (as in doing the 3) as they have no success rate for this surgery.

I have always felt a disc replacement would be more appropriate for me however but my surgeon says it is not offered at that hospital as they have no medical history long term of fusions...and he doesnt know of anywhere else who would either.

Now all this confuses me and I am not sure about going ahead with fusing the 2 if it means the 3rd disc will get worse.

Also the herniated disc at cervical level they will never touch.
The best they can offer me is 50% improvement in my pain with 2 of the discs fused.
I just cant decide, no matter that I have had a detailed consultation with the surgeon I cant seem to get anywhere.

So please help me get these things straight in my head, any advice or comments appreciated!
