no "C" in cervical vertebrae

Experiencing sharp, stabbing pulsating pain starting from base of neck to left deltoid.  Noticed weakness in left arm while lifting. Sensory intact. Xrays revealed C4 and C5 compressed with protrusions and some degeneration. Structurally, the cervical vertebrae are not in the nice "C" shape, rather they are almost in a straight line. MD believes that it may be due to an old injury, possibly an auto accident experienced 20 yrs ago (not certain as I did not have whiplash or neck injury). MRI showed protrusion of C4 or C5 (not sure) close to spinal cord if not touching.  Was given Steroids and neck brace to help with pain and reduce inflammation.  I am concerned about options.  I was told to rest.  Therapy was not definitive nor was surgery at this time. I believe that something has to be done....correcting the curve or lack of one if possible via therapy. I'm not certain if that could be done.  Please apprise of anything that could be done in lieu of surg.
