numbness

What can cause numbness/tingling in your mid back?
Went to my chiropractor yesterday because I thought it was a pinched nerve or something...he told me no.
He said that I should go and see my doctor. Why?
It all started a few weeks ago with back pain. Every time I would breathe in I would get the worst pain spread across my lower back. Now I have a numb/tingly feeling somewhere around my left shoulder blade. If I sit leaning ahead it gets worse, and leaning back seems to help somewhat...hence the belief that it was a pinched nerve.
Chiro told me that he knows of two things that can cause that...he said one was stress/depression/anxiety...he wouldn't tell me the other.
I have also noted that at times, if I touch the numb area it will send a sharp pain into my stomach, straight across from where I apply the slight pressure.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the info.
I kinda figured that it had to be a pinched nerve or something because a few years back I broke my small toe on my right foot and can't feel the small or big toe since...doctor said that a nerve must have been pinched when it was put back into place...also got dropped on my head about 17 years ago and since then have no feeling in my left thumb. Had seen a nerve specialist about that...she did testing but then said not much could be done about it...don't know why...but it makes sense to me that the numbness and tingling in my back must be related to the same kind of nerve problems.
I saw my doctor and he wants to test me for osteoporosis as my mom has it.
Guess we'll find out.
Thanks again for the wonderful insight and info!

Is it possible for you to go to a different chiro. or a neurologist? It certainly sounds like a pinched nerve to me. I would request a mri. You could have a bulging or herniated disk or just a simple pinched nerve. I have never heard of stress ect causing your symptoms that just does not sound right to me. Pinched nerves do cause numbness and tingling. I had my disk from S1-L3 herniate and I am now permanently numb from my waist down. I would really get it checked by a different doctor. There is a chart of the spinal nerves and what they can affect on my profile, go check it out. It may help you to understand your symptoms better. Good luck to you hope you find the problem soon

       Best wishes, Sissie
