pain medication for fibromyalgia

pain medication for fibromyalgia

I was just wondering if OxyContin is used for Fibromyalgia patients? I know someone who has been on OxyContin for about 9 years for Fibromyalgia pain. This person gets about 90 OxyContin a month. I personally think that is outrageous. I really wish the FDA would get rid of this drug completely.

I have FMS along with other issues such as ddd, severe arthritis, spinal stenosis, and possibly Lupus. I have been dealing with these issues for about five years - fibromyalgia was one of the first diagnosis. The only time I've taken OxyContin is after minor surger for about a day and a half, then I went back to my regular meds. For fibro I have found Lyrica to help more than narcotics. 90/month does not sound right to me either, but every case is different and I try not to judge.

That's what I thought OxyContin was only used for. And you are not suppose to be on this drug for a long period of time. Can her doctor get in trouble for prescribing her a narcotic for 9 years that is not necessary? In her case, her fibromyaglia is mild.

Wow, I don't think I would try and classify anyone's fibro myself, especially if you aren't with them daily.  I have a couple of friends and a family memeber with it and they are very good at "pretending" to have nothing wrong with them when around some people, but if you saw them on their bad days, you would understand this disease so much better.  Two of the people I know take oxycontin 3 times a day (90 a month) for their pain.  This also allows them some freedom from pain ,so their fibro might look mild because of that too!  And actually Oxycontin is not supposed to be used for short term pain relief, like after surgery but for chronic pain.  I don't know your friends case, and why you think they shouldn't take the meds. There are people who abuse all types of meds., but not everyone does!  There are some really valid reasons to have this drug available, and when used correctly it helps without causing problems!!
