I dont think what you have is spina bifida. My son has spina bifida and you are born with it. The spine does not develop correctly and remains open creating a sac. That sac contains vital nerves with are removed at birth with the sac. In my sons case he lost the nerves to control his bowel and bladder. His back is never in pain....but he will have lifelong problems due to the missing nerves.  Not sure if this helps.

I too have spina bifida occulta and scoloisis. I am 41 years old and was diagnosed with scoliosis by a school nurse in the 3rd grade. Sadly my family doctor dropped the ball by telling my parents I was fine and my lopsided hips were caused by carrying my siblings on my hips. (I am from a large family) Starting in my teens I began to suffer from horrible headaches, which run in the family. By my early 20's I began havine massive migraines. I finally found my way to the right doctors in my 30's following massive headaches, back, neck and leg pain, and leg numbness and weakness.(after I had my children) I have 3 children, child #1 was delivered by emergency c-section and I had a eppidural. I was lucky with that one. Child #2 was a c-section as the doctors did not feel V-Back was safe for me and I was also given a epidural. That one was HORRIBLE! The intense pain shot down my legs and up my back and I screamed for them to remove it. For years following that epidural my days started with me having to crawl around for hours before I could stand upright. It was miserable. On the third child they did a spinal tap, which was a bit better. My pain and medical problems have gotten worse over the years and I have seen my fair share of doctors. I have been told that they can not operate due to the spina bifida occulta and scoloisis combiation that I happen to have. I am on daily meds to keep the migraines to a minimum (I now suffer about 8 times a month instead of 15-20 times a month) I take meds when the headaches begin and I just kind of deal with the rest, just wondering when I will end up in a wheel chair. I have had 2 spinal epidurals where they inject steriods into your spine to help with the pain, but they did not help very much. I feel blessed every day I can get out of bed and try to enjoy my life to its fullness. I know that many people suffer way more than I do in this world, but there are times when I just break down and cry. I have a wonderful husband and kids and a great neorologist who has helped keep some of my pain at bay. I am responding to your post just so you know you are not alone. Sometimes it helps to know that other people really do know how you feel, and are not just saying they do. Never give up and never stop moving. I am a firm beleiver that even in our pain ridden situations that we do have some control over our lives and what we can and can not do.
