shoulder pain & finger tingling

I have some pain in my left shoulder and numbness in my fingers & arm if I sleep on that shoulder or carry things using the left hand and shoulder.  I do have a brace for my wrist that I wear at night for possible corpal tunnel.  But what could it be that the pressure of sleeping on the shoulder or carry my school bag on it makes the fingers and arm get tingling.  Should I be applyin ice or heat, and are there exercises that help for both the shoulder & wrist?

I have had these exact symtpoms for the past year and it's only getting worse.  My doctor said to stretch the problem arm across my body, but this has not helped so far.

Do you work in an office setting?  I'm thinking of purchasing an ergonomic keyboard; however, it is expensive: http://www.safetype.com/how-it-works.htm.

My doctor also said that if the problem persists that we could do a nerve conduction test and possibly surgery.  Yikes, that seems extreme.

Does anyone else have a remedy?
