strange pain

i have been being treated for low back pain, bad discs and degenerative disease and now arthritis. for the last few months or so i have been having this pain that i can only explain as a severly painful shiver that starts in my upper back and goes around my chest and ribs and down my arms, both arms. it wakes me up every night and it only happens when i lay down.  i try sleeping propped up but that hurts my low back and that wakes me up, and my head flops forward or to the side and my neck hurts more than usual. my pain specialist said it is probably the same thing as my low back, but in my neck, but it is a totally different pain. what would cause a shiver type pain that doesn't know when to stop?
