the MD's nurse should fit you preop- it is for protection..I wore mine very little..you won't need it for sleep..good luck

My first experience stunk because the nurse put it on backwards,my doctor was not a happy camper.  after that it was just hot because it was warm out.

thank you your answer was just what I was hoping for a hint of how to make it better. Should I phone my dr tommrow to see if I can drop by the office for measurement or would they be able to do that in hospital pre op.

also how does one sleep with a brace, I am guessing on the back?

I did not wear a collar following my fusion, but I have heard others report that they are uncomfortable if not fitted properly.  It depends on the manufacturer and which type of collar is selected.

The primary concern was increased perspiration and skin problems such as a rash.
If possible you should see if they can have you fitted with the collar prior to your surgery so any adjustments can be made.  It may be more difficult to make adjustments if they place the collar on immediately following surgery.  Discuss it with your surgeon.  He may have a specific preference regarding the type and size of collar to be used and may have already provided other of his patients with guidelines regarding potential skin problems.

Hoping your surgery goes well and that you are able to continue your college studies without any interruption.
