Pedicure! Friend or fo?

A couple of weeks ago I went to get a pedicure. I always have the french manicure thing done because it looks so good and clean and stays for a long time. Due to this color, I am able to see inpurities in my nails. On my left big toe, there is what looks like to me a bruise that starts at the bottom of my nail shaft. Well, I was looking at it earlier and the blue color has gotten darker and has spread to the top of my nail. Is this infection or what?

Sounds like something you need to get checked out by your doctor.  It could be a fungus, which is easy to treat.

It is a good idea to take your own tools (clippers, files, etc.) with you to the nail salon.  

My husband had a nail infection (that began from bruising the toenail from running) and according to the Podiatrist, he should use his own nail clippers, etc. because a fungus is easily transferrable.  That being said, imagine how many people they use the same tools on at nail salons, and how many different ailments they may have!  

Get your toe checked as soon as possible because the fungus can spread to your skin as well and affect your overall health if left untreated.

Hi, being an Esthetician, I know all about the disinfecting that goes on in salons and spas.  I can also tell you that there are a lot of places out there that do not sterilize their tools properly, quite simply, if it's a busy place, a lot of them don't even bother with sterilizing.  Yes, you can get fungus and a whole lot of other diseases from these tools.  Please, ladies out there, be careful where you go and remember, you have the right to ask to see that the tools come right out of the sterilizer. After all, you are paying for it.
