Removing black hair dye?

Hi,

I have dark brown hair that I dyed using a semi-permanent dye several months ago ... only problem is, it was more than semi-permanent! Now the lighter roots are beginning to grow out. I know that the best option is to see a salon professional, but I can't afford that right now. An old friend is visiting in a month so I want to try something at home before we reunite.

Can I dye my hair back to its natural color without frying it? Will this even lighten the black? I just hate these roots!

I have the same problem you do. And yes, over-the-counter hair dye will lighten your darker hair. But I'd buy a few boxes and keep them on had so you have more to fall back on.
