Abilify and caffeine?

by Slimoo, Jun 28, 2008 10:21PM
Does anyone know if it is OK to drink coffee / take in caffeine while on Abilify? I am on Abilify 5 mg,

and I have not had any problems other than drowsiness. It has cleared my anxiety, though my

doctor says she does not see the major/normal  factors of bipolar disorder, and she believes that

something else underlying caused my depression period. I am wondering if anyone else has

taken a cup of coffee or two to nullify the effects of drowsiness? I'm going back to school in the fall

and though I enjoy having better concentration, etc. it won't help much if I'm toppeled over my

books, snoring. Any suggestions and previous experience would be really great, thanks.

Namaste,
There should be and problem with having a cup of coffe or other drinks containing caffeine since Abilify can cause drowsiness you should probably be taking it at bedtime.
Aripiprazole is an antipsychotic medication. It works by changing the actions of chemicals in the brain.
Aripiprazole is used to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression). It is also used together with other medications to treat major depressive disorder in adults.
You mentioned that it cleaared your anxiety, but you didn't say anything to your doctor about anxiety.
Anxiety can be a completely different issue and may require a different course of action.
When you talk with your doctor make sure they are aware of all the symptoms you are experiencing. Making a list or keeping a journal can be helpful.

I'm on 30 mg of Abilify, but I've been on it for almost 3 years.  I was scared to drink coffee at first, well when I was first diagnosed with BP anyway, but then I got over being scared and am now back to being a caffeine addict.  It doesn't bother me, but my body is used to the meds already.  So maybe you should wait till your body is used to the meds before adding caffeine back in.
