Antidepressants in General

I just thought I should have thrown my question out there on to a broader playing field so I'm going to ask again but this time include all antidepressants.  Sorry for having to post this type of question twice.

How has any antidepressant any of you have tried also worked for your anxiety?  As I said in the other question, I was prescribed an antidepressant for anxiety.  And I know, medicines work differently for each person, I'm just wanting to get an idea of the general efficacy of antidepressants when it comes to anxiety and hear other people's stories.

We'll see how it effects me in the coming months, I could very well get manic in the end anyway, but as I said it made me so relaxed the other day I didn't feel like even doing anything.  The new DSM, if current planned revisions stay the same, is going to start looking for mania and depression also in schizophrenia and all other psychotic disorders so it'll be interesting to see how they diagnose people in the future.

They are finding similar genetic markers in schizophrenia and bipolar in some of the more recent research so it is likely the two are interconnected. The fact that medication works for both disorders also lends itself to that train of thought.

For anxiety I found Cipralex helped most. However a warning for the bipolar people. Use of antidepressants, especially without a stabilizer, can lead to rapid cycling according to some research. I am sure that is what happened to me.

Schizophrenia can be mistaken as bipolar disorder and vice-versa because they can present in such a similar manner and I believe the two should be put on a spectrum as one disease to be honest.  Distraction can be a good way of coping with it but as for a job and a love affair, I'm sort of screwed there but that's another story.  I take Abilify for my schizophrenia and now Zoloft for my anxiety.  The Zoloft seems to be working (as I'm not jittery anymore and feel calm) but it's killed my appetite and sometimes it makes me so relaxed I don't want to do anything.

i don't know enough abt schizrophenia but being suicidal can be due to many reasons not just depression. Being depressed is different i suppose from clinical depression. The latter you need an AD, but the former comes and go. Of course people with even heart problems can feel depressed from time to time and this natural. So being schizo you not only lose ties with reality but you see yourself stuck in the middle of nowhere but you may not need an AD.

I believe the best strategy in any illness not just psychic is to forget about it and get involved in all time consuming things, or to feel achiever even in the gym, something to live for, to get busy, a job , a love affair, even an innocent friendship will do.

i wouldn't go into more meds, AD's or either. Your ups and downs are natural phenomena that can occur to anybody.

my advise don't think about yourself too much. Don't look at the mirror often.

zoloft/sertraline is a famous SSRI in the USA. My experience was suicidal like hell. So people differ. It's only 10 years old. I think seroquel can help you for although an AP but good for anxiety contrary to abilify. I don't know what you take but seroquel is my God send

They told me at the hospital I don't have enough symptoms to fit under being depressed, I just have regular old run of the mill schizophrenia because I've definitely never been manic or hypomanic either.  They thought I might be depressed because I was suicidal and checked me for it but I wasn't sad or anything like that.  I post on this forum about this stuff because there are way more people here than the schizophrenia forum and you guys have experience with the same meds and similar symptoms and you guys are great and helpful.

It's good to hear you're doing better.  I remember you wrote somewhere you felt like the pyramids but upside down such as in your profile picture.  I continue to stay and help people even when I'm doing better just because I want to.  Earlier when I was tired the Zoloft was making me so relaxed I didn't even want to do anything which is weird because I've never been relaxed like that.

Hi

Most AD's lower anxiety. Funny sun says citalopram/celexa/cipram  NO. Yet its cousin cipralex/lexapro/escitalopram did wonders for me as far as depression and anxiety are concerned. But of course all the benefits soon disappear and the usual mania comes.

If I remember well I PM you sometime ago asking about the AD you use and you replied that you don't use them simply you don't need them and i thought then that is weird because how do you manage depression since I know every BP species must eventually fall into depression and this is why they call it Bi .

I think the worst thing - out of experience - that i tried are the AD's. You are happy for a while then you pay for this happiness a high bill. AD's worsen mania, lead to mixed states and rapid cycling. Of course this is easily said than done as not to use them, because how can you manage without them.

I remember to have written a post which i called: if you can stop depression then you can beat BP. I believe this is true. Simply because you will not be depressed at first. Second you will not have to take AD's so you will not get manic too, thus no Bi. Unless of course you are BP in origin which is bloody rare  The USA has a rate of 4.5 % (announced) in population simply because of the abuse of AD. India is 0.19 %. I think this disorder is an enemy of AD's.

Right now, I didn't take them for one whole year, why i don't know !! except that after my last horrible mania which lasted for eight months and extinguished it with great difficulty, somehow i turned to BP1 and needing AP's only. Perhaps this is the case, still i don't know. I started to think that BP2 is not best because depression is the major issue --> AD use. You notice that i post less in medhelp because i am almost stable and have a job. Of course I am not completely normal or happy. Sometimes i don't go to work, but at least functioning. The reason i suppose because I stopped the AD

Anyway in order not to complicate things for you. During my 10 years of BP my experience with the AD's is:

tricyclics are worst
SSRI good for anxiety but end in mania
SSRE are best : coaxil or stablon (French from Servier) is the best i tried for anxiety but of course i ended with a mania but after a longer time. They SAY in sites that it doesn't bring mania and i think this can be "true" perhaps except that my mania was due that at its onset my stupid pdoc continued the stablon which was wrong, so perhaps it was agrevated and not really the stablon.

good luck though
