BPD or hypothyroidism?

by confusedinTX7369, Feb 03, 2008 01:52PM
My wife was diagnosed 4 years ago with Bi-polar disorder and has been under the care of a phsyciatrist. Twice in those years she has tested positive for hypothyroidism. Her phsychiatrist currently has her on a regimen of wellbutrin, lamictal, klonopin, lithium (recently added) & Invega (recently added). Over those 4 years she has been on just about every med there is for this disorder with no good results. Her physician just recently started treating her hypothyroidism (second time) & she is having very bad reactions to one or more of the meds. She is having slurred speach, disorientation and a lack of focus.

Is it possible that some or all of her conditions were caused by the hypothyroidism rather than BPD? and if so how do we get the psychiatrist to acknowledge this? We have been able to get nothing from her psychiatrist in regard to this.

it is definatly possible  because of the hypothryoidism  being hypo is often mistaken for being bi polar. I am thryoidless myself so I take levthyroixine and I am now down to the lowest dose of celexa and zyprexa. be sure you wife is seeing agood endo that specializes in thyroid disorders Hve her come over to they thryoid board as well . there are losts of wonderful folks there who can help her and give her lots of good info to take to her endo. Keep me posted on her progress.

Venora, is right.  I'm thyroidless also and right now I'm hypo.  A lot of the symptoms are the same.  Especially the anxiety.  I'm hypo right now and the anxiety and panic attacks are about to drive me insane!

Make sure they get the thyroid taken care of ASAP.  You'll be amazed the difference even being mildly hypo can have on your psychy.

We would more than welcome her to the thyroid forum.
