Bipolar Meds and Diabetes

I have been on BP meds for several years.  About a year ago I was diagnosed as diabetic.  I've heard that the zyprexa and others like it can cause high blood sugar.  Diabetes also runs on both sides of my family.  Are there any mood stabilizers out there that don't cause Diabetes?  I like the Zyprexa because it works really well for me.  I guess I am just wondering if there is anyone else out there like me?

Zyprexa is the antipsychotic that is most likely to cause this. I myself gained 35 pounds when I was on Zyprexa. Abilify the least likely but it still can happen. The antipsychotic agent I am on in Phase II FDA study won't do this but it hasn't been studied for mood stabilization yet and I need a mood stabilizer as well. Out of the mood stabilizers, Lithium and Depakoate are more likely to cause weight gain than Lamictal so Lamictal might be one viable option.

It is the weight gain that causes the diabetes. Try 6 small meals a day with a protien and carb in small portions. I take ayprexa and I have lost 46 pounds and I am not diabetic I love my zyprexa and I am not going to give it up. I did gain weight at first on it but I have since lost the weight. It is possible to keep the weight off on zyprexa.
