Bipolar Pregnancy

I was told by my psychiatrists' receptionist that he would not see me after I was pregnant.  My OB doctor told me I really need to get a psychiatrist, but every office that I call say they will not prescribe to pregnant women.

This doesnt sound right, even if they will not prescribe medication your moods should be monitored during your pregnancy. I hope you can get someone to look after you. :)

There should been some medications that can be taken during pregnancy. Some have a specific notation on the prescription label they cannot be. However there should be some that can be. See if your general physician can provide a referral to a psychiatrist perhaps one with specific knowledge in this area who can then discuss this concern with your ob-gyn.

Here there are maternal psychiatrists that handle pregnancy cases. I would call the University Hospital in your area and ask. They tend to have more specialists. I would also focus on calling women psychiatrists, they would naturally tend to do more maternal work. It seems to me that some psychiatrist should be willing to prescribe it your case is severe enough to warrant it. A manic mom is not a safe mom, and women who are depressed are more likely to deliver pre-term.

Some medication is safer than other. Did some research myself. Lithium and Lamotrigine aren't bad, the antipsychotics aren't so good. The newest edition of the Bipolar Survival Guide has some good information about woman and pregnancy.

Good luck with your pregnancy.

I agree I don't think it would be good for you or your baby to go without help for your bipolar. I am not a doctor so I cannot say what is best on meds if any. I do think you should keep looking someone out there will help you. If anything see if your obgyn can help you find one...maybe even give you a referal to somewhere. Keep at it and best of luck dear.
