Bipolar and pregnant

I am Bipolar and was taking quetiapine (seroquel) for the last few years on and off. I have been in and out of hospital a few times over the last 10 years and fought like mad to convince doctors and family that there was nothing wrong with me but every three or so years I seem to slip into a worrying state. I have been with my partner for just over 2 years and he knows i am bipolar but has not really witnessed me at my worst. He is very supportive and has read up on bipolar etc but seems to think that there is nothing wrong with me (which is nice, but not quite true). I found out i was pregnant a month ago and immediately stopped taking my medication (i felt it was the best thing to do). After initial sickness and a few sleepless nights i am feeling ok and am cautiously happy about the next few months. I would just like to ask if anyone has any advice on the effects of pregnancy and what i can do to avoid having an episode. It would be horrible to have to go to hospital or be forced to take medication while i am pregnant. Bit scared about being unmedicated but at present i feel ok and want to do the best for my unborn child.

I would try to see a psychiatrist or counselor during your pregnancy to help with handling the new event in your life; it also gives a professional a chance to monitor you.  I wish you the best and congratulations on your pregnancy!

This is a tough question. Some psychiatrists specialize in treating pregnant patients.  Perhaps you could see if there is someone in your community.  If not, the nearest medical school may have a faculty member who is familiar with this topic.  Also, be sure you're seeing your psychiatrist regularly to monitor for mood instability.  The antipsychotics (like Seroquel) should not be taken during pregnancy, but some of the mood stabilizers may be safer.
