Hi Robbin. Yes. The other 2 posts are absolutely correct.
Lamotrigene ( lamictal) is usually taken in lieu of Lithium.
Both are mood stabling drugs.
Something like Wellbutrin is an antidepressant. Pamela
I use Lamictal as my mood stabilizer and take Effexor and Abilify for my depression. The combo of all of these had made all of the difference in the world for me.
I take 200mg/day of the Lamictal and for me it worked pretty much right away but seemed to lose its effectiveness after the first 6-7 months. So after getting up to the full dose 200mg, my doc added Effexor and then eventually the Abilify.
I'm BP2 also and have tried so many different meds over the years I lost count. It's such an exhausting process to try new meds, wait to see if it helps, and start over if not.
Also.... don't forget it's the holidays now so we are likely to be more out of sorts with all of the added demands and stressors.
It's arguably the best drug for BP II out there, because it does depression VERY well in a lot of people. It is approved for BP I monotherapy, but it isn't so great at mania. Everyone's different, though, so it may not work out for you. What dose are you on? Target is 100-200 mg if you aren't taking anything that will screw with its metabolism.
