Im bipolar but my parents dont believe me

I'm sure im bipolar, infact I'm going to see psyciatrist next week to get some sort of meds. IT's starting to effect my relationships and school work, it causes me to do this that ican't control and wish i could. When I do or say something wrong I don't mean to and when I try to explain its really not my fault they don't believe me. It makes it even more difficult than it already is and doesn't help me deal with the problem any better. It even just triggers my moods to swing and freak out. I hate to use it as an excuse but its the truth...sometimes you just can't control it and don't even know what or why your doing the things you do.

How do I help the others around me understand?

I'm right there with you.  I was dx 12-13 years ago and my parents still think I'm not and that it is just an embarrassment to mention it.  You know what?  =(~ on them!  You are the one who has to live with it and know when you need help.  I have NEVER regretted getting the help.  Am actually VERY thankful for the nervous break down that finally got me the help.  Best thing that ever happened to me.

Hang in there and don't worry about what they say.

How old are you?  Could you get in to talk to your dr alone, or do you have a counselor at school or somebody like that to help you out?  A school counselor would be a great person to talk to and help your mom to see what was going on with you.  If your dr is someone you can go see on your own and some one you trust that would be another good place.

You also might check in your state to see if you need parental consent to see a therapist.  Usually mental health issues can be taken care of free of charge if you can't afford it.  Check into your state laws and see what they say about it.

Good luck.

Hi

Saw you were online today, was wondering if you made it to your psych appointment and how it went?

Feeling any better?

As the mother of a woman with bipolar, I think it is really sad that your parents are either embarrassed/guilty/ashamed to support you through this. While my daughter is in control of her own life, I know our relationship is much stronger, and possibly her health is much more in control, because she has had loving support.

I promised myself that I would treat this illness as any other very serious condition, and I have learned as much as possible about this illness.  I think I can separate behaviours associated with the illness, and can emotionally detach when I need to.

All the very best, and I do hope your parents can find strength within themselves to face up to your situation.  Get as much help and support as you can - it does make a difference in the long term.

And you should be very proud of yourself - you show an amazing amount of maturity and I know that because of this you will have a wonderful life.

Don't feel too bad.  It happens.  Sometimes families even disown sick people--just too much for them--even if that person has gotten better.

It is better to be stronger on your own  than weaker with a multitude.

Good luck--hope your dr. visit goes well.

If you indeed do have BPD, have your doctor write up an official diagnosis. I'm not saying that you don't have BPD, but a lot of people seem to like to say they have it. I suppose there is some romanticism and definitely attention gained in mental illness, but it's not as fun as one might think. Also, if you go to a doctor for one visit and he/she gives you pills and says you have BPD, you might try finding a new practitioner. True diagnosis usually takes multiple visits over and extended period of time, even months to years to detect true mood cycling in some people.

Not to get picky but I was under the impression that BP is for Bipolar

And that BPD stands for Borderline Personality Disorder.

Just trying to keep any confusion down.

I actually have Bipolar and i have struggled with it for quiet awhile now. My parents just found out like 2 weeks ago, it all started in 7th grade i got hooked on drugs and alcohol and i stole my parents car and their friends car, i shoplifted from stores. i didn't know what was wrong with me at the time i just thought i was a bad child. i had really good grades in elementry school and then they started to slip throughout middle and high school. im a sophmore and i don't have the amount of credits i need to graduate yet and i have to work twice as hard as everyone else. i finally got on my meds and i'm doing alot better but when this would happen i would feel like i was high and that i could do anything that i wanted to do when i wanted to do it and no one could stop me. sometimes i don't want to accept the fact that i have bipolar but i have to and thats that.
