Important

by chigirl29, Jan 30, 2008 06:06PM
Anyone diagnosed Bipolar or Depressive  or BPD needs to have a thyroid level test and a thyroid antibody test done.  It is a simple blood test. It is important to ask for these before beginning any medications.

Why?

Imbalance of the thyroid and/or thyroid disease (autoimmune) can mimic mental illnesses.

They can cause depression, mania, psychosis, and unstable mood.

Always rule out medical causes first.

Take Care.

I have been saying this all along and its really important to have thyroid tested if you have been on lithium or depakopte. both these meds will damage the thyroid.. thanks chigirl for bringing this up.

Thanks...you are right about lithium and depakote--I didn't think about that.  Thanks for adding it.
