Is it safe for help...

by ConceredHusband, Aug 04, 2008 11:50PM
I dont know how to realy ask this. But I have been reading up on many articals about manic depression and bi-pola disorders. She is finnaly at the point where she want to talk to someone about it and get some help. The only people is that we have a month old child and she is afraid is she seks help that our child could be taken from us. I am also afraid of the same out come. I know that I am able to care for both and take care of my child unitl she is better. But with everything going on these days it is a scary thought of lossen a child so that she may seek help. I guess my question is if she sees a thyrapist will it be kept privet so that she may get the help she needs or is it only going to get worse becuase she will be worry about loosen her son because of all this. Please help. I want my wife to be happy and our child to grow up in a home were both parents our not happy. My biggest fair is my child growing up not know why mommy is mad or what he did wrong.. Thank you for the help .

You could call a therapists' office or a psychiatrists' office in your area and ask them your questions over the phone.  You can be anonymous that way - they don't have to know your name to answer some of your questions.
Treatment really works, so I hope you find a good solution. Good Luck.

No one is going to take away your baby unless there is abuse or neglect--and then someone has to point out that there is abuse or neglect.  Therapy is not grounds for removing a child from a parent.  However, if someone thinks your wife needs help and is not safe because she isn't getting it and reports it, then you could have a problem.

A child would not be removed from the home unless it was thought that the child was at risk of being harmed.  By seeking help your wife is acknowledging she has an illness and will be helped to cope with it and ease the symptoms.  The fact that you are there to and willing to support her and look after the little one is great.  Don't let your wife put off getting help.  I too worried about having my children taken off me - I have 4 children, but in fact instead i was offered support and help.

As Lizz67 said if you are very concerned about this then speak anonymously to the clinic first.

All the best.

I believe that unless a person is a danger to themselves or other people, then whatever is said between the patient and doctor is strictly confidential.  Your wife should not worry about losing your children.  As noted in the above post, the fact that she is seeking help is a POSITIVE thing in her favor.

When I was going through a bad manic episode I did some terrible things, although they did not harm anyone they were completely out of character for me and also illegal.  My doctor kept all that information in confidence -- he prescribed meds and although I still suffer from bp symptoms, the bad behavior I was exhibiting is now under control.
