LIthium or some other medication

by flubbedup, Oct 30, 2009 10:54PM
I think my lithium for bp 2 is causing me to twitch and jerk mostly when in a relaxed state. It bothers me, I try to keep if from happening then it almost seems to build up and then comes out all at once and so I jerk and twitch more then before I tried to stop it. I tried to mention it to my meds lady but she don't seem to listen to me any more, I don't like that she don't. Any ideas, any help is welcomed.

Hi there.Lithium is known to be associated with tremors and passing of large amounts of urine(Diabetes insipidus) so if the med is not suiting you u could ask for a change of med to Lamictal or trileptal both of which are anticonvulsants with excellent mood stabilizing qualities.

I have had what you experienced to the point of water shaking out of glass when holding it. Luckily it passed.  I get a tremor here and there.  Tell your psych and internest, get your levels checked with a blood test.  Yes causes excessive urination but have found the more water I drink the less tremors I have.  I like the drug the newer ones don't control the balance for me as well.  Hope this helps.

Has Lithium caused you weigh gain?

I don't believe it is any of the meds.  I do believe it is lethargy, due to the depression.
Two years after being diagnosed with bipolar2 I lost a considerable amount of weight over a short period following a Christian program got down to a four, felt like a failure because at 45 I couldn't get down to a size 2.  So proceeded to pack on the pounds almost intentionally, but again not because of the lithium.  I take a thyroid pill due to the causes of lithium and that would if anything help me lose weight.  I'm headed down again by walking my two large dogs, eating more homemade soups and not junk food and doing an oral cleanse program here and there. Good luck.

Temporary movement disorders as well as permanent ones can come from an antipsychotic. Think if you are taking other medications as well or have done so in the past. Lithium can't cause this effect but it can worsen temporary movement disorders such as akathesia from an antipsychotic because it raises the blood levels of them. I know because it happenned to me and my psychopharmocologist explained it. Temporary movement disorder can be treated with a side effect pill.
