Lithium and thyroid problems

by Rumberger, Oct 09, 2008 11:17PM
I am taking 300 mg. of lithium carbonate and EffexorXR 150 mg. once a day. I have gained 15 lbs. on the lithium and am very unhappy with that. I have also developed a thyroid nodule (after 2 years on lithium) and am taking 100 mcg of synthroid a day. Did the lithium cause the thyroid problem and is it reversible if the lithium is stopped?

Lithium does not cause the problem per se based on what I understand but it can bring on problems in people with a predisposition - The best thing to do is talk to your doctor and discuss what to do - nodules can be treated.

Sadly lithium being what it is (a salt) can be bad for people with thyroid issues and you need to work with your doc to find another MS - good luck and dont forget we are here if you need someone to lean on.
