Med question for the guys....and girls perhaps

by gritt2008, Apr 09, 2009 10:54AM
Okay...forgive my bluntness here but there is no way pc way to ask this rather embarassing question.  does anyone find that their meds "ruin" an orgasm.  I dont mean the obvious things such as Zoloft creating an inability in men to "finnish" (Heck, at 42 that can be a bonus sometimes...LOL), or a general loss of sexual desire.
What I mean is it just doesnt seem as euphoric or same physical "pow" as opposed to more of a dulled down feeling.  Is it more mental as a result of the overall effect medications have on BP in smoothing things out or is it truly a physical effect that takes away some of the zing?
Curious as to what others notice on the various meds they take.

Yes the girls as well. Call asap your psychiatrist and see if he/she will put you on something else.  Both Effexor and Zoloft affected me this way, but they are meds that need to be gradually decreased. You will  be much better after going off.  But you cannot just decide to stop them, they are extremely difficult meds to get off and you need to be under the supervision of your psychiatrist in order to change to another.  Be careful, know there are other choices and when you get back to the other side don't worry, the "feeling" comes back beautifully.

It depends what affect you mean and what medication. Antipsychotics (at least the ones currently available, though not the ones in study) cause prolactin elevation (especially the older generation) so as a rule they can often lower sex drive. SSRI's don't have that specific effect but can affect sex drive. The anti-cholingergic (drying) effect of medications that also causes blurred vision and dry mouth can make ejaculation difficult or painful. I myself from that effect have chronic prostatitis for which I was suggested to take saw palmetto by a urologist (but it should only be taken after a urologist does an exam and allows its use but it is helpful). Lithium and Depakoate lowered my sex drive. Lamictal didn't cause much of a problem and generally doesn't for people. The Clonidine I take now practically wipes it out but that's not a first line mood stabilizer for anyone. This answer might belong in a different forum but its as much as I know. Best to speak to your psychiarist and ask about medication adjustment and if you ever have pain or a burning sensation see a urologist. Reduction in sex drive or performance is a common effect of many psychiatric medications but some more than others.

Yes, from a girls perspective I've had the same thing on some of the meds I've tried.  As zzzmykids has said you need to talk to your psych about this and maybe try a different med or maybe just a different dose of the one your on.  If you link when this started to the same time as when you started a particular med then make this known.

Good luck.

Yes....now the sex drive will be saying bye-bye........ugh.  I can see why it is so easy to NOT take your meds....they suck.  No...not more than being utterly depressed or bad manic....although some manic days were decent in what I could get done in that time........Meds bad but labotomy worse.......

I asked my dr for a labotomy but he refused. At times I think it would be the better choice.

I'm on Risperdal, Lithium and Celexa.
I had a sex drive until Celexa.  Now I have none.  I think about having sex, but I never actually care to have it.  I know I can orgasm because I've tried, but I really don't have a sex drive anymore.

I'm gonna try to get off the celexa soon.  Hopefully it comes back.
