Meds question

How long did it take for those who have been on meds, (and they are successfully working to get the) for you to get the right medication prescribed? It seems nothing is working for me and it seems to be taking forever.

It's taken me about 7 years of going on and off many different meds to find the right cocktail for me.

Hi, I have been on various meds over the last 2 years, currently on Depakote + Risperidone + Mirtazapine, to be honest I don't feel any different than before the meds, still rapid cycling to the anoyance of my family, one minute I'm confined to my bed not wanting to look at anyone let alone  talk to them, next minute I'm racing around like there's not enough time in the day.
I don't think its a matter of the doctors not listening but more that they do not understand the true extent of Bipolar and therefore keep getting it wrong.
Debbie :)

Hi There, I hate to tell you but I have been trying to find the right combo of treatment for thirty years! Nothing seems to work well for me. I had resisted mood stabilisers till recently and even priadel does not seem to be working for me. anti-depressants on their own of course had me all over the place because of misdiagnosis, it seems none of the docs i've been to had ever heard of dysphoric mania! i keep hoping priadel will kick in as i have had enough at this point. Good luck with your quest for good meds. Daily strength is another site that has lots of good info, the more info you can have the better because docs rarely listen.

Trying to find the right cocktail is my only answer. I gained a lot of weight on Zyprexa & had every side effect known on Seroquel. I finally found a Godsend in Abilify (30 mg).
I take Lamictal now for the seizures & it also helps the Abilify. I am now at an even place, no cycling at all, for several months. I have only been diagnosed due to a medical trauma for 6 years.
My  16 year old daughter os OCD. My Brother & Mom are BP. Family trait that is wonderful eh?
Keep trying & never accept anything that "just doesn't quite work" or you will crash!

I have been on lithium, depakote, luvox and others I cant remember That was after episode1. It made me feel  like a zombie and in my job I have to be alert and focused.
I told the pdoc I had found in the yellow pages I need to be off all those meds so he put me on the depake.  that was better but I still cycled on a regular basis
I think it took about 2 years after episode 2 in the hospital. The pdoc put me on the zyprexa and celexa I am on now. It works great for me as long as I take it.
When I had episode 3 ,I thought I had found the lord and I was healed of bi polar and didnt need to take my meds anymore so episode 3 happened and I was back in the hospital back with the same pdoc and he put me back on the zyprexa, celexa, as well as tegretol. I then went back to the pdoc I found after episode2 I told I didnt think I needed the tegretol any more but we decided to stay on the celexa, zyprexa combo and it works great.
I know that is confusing .Sometimes I cant remmber all the details of episode 1,2, and 3
the funny thing is that everytime I have gone off mey meds the only withdrawl I get is to go back to being extremely bi polar with psychosis, paranoia.OCD, and schizoid.
so now I have learnd my lesson. I am bi polar and maybe the deities gave us these meds and that is how they heal us. That is just a theory of mine.
Love Venora.

Namaste,

Sorry to have to tell you this, but it has taken me over 6 years to find a combination of medications that seem to work, even though I don't I don't think we're quite there yet.

I wish you luck on your search for the appropriate medications that work for you.
