Methods of controlling tantrums?

by mrgrim333, Nov 02, 2009 02:11AM
Ok, let me start by saying this is a question pertaining to my spouse.
She suffers from bipolar disorder and some other conditions.

The problem is, we haven't been able to afford her meds for the past 6 months.
She's been doing pretty good, an occasional outburst, but nothing too bad.
One thing she can't control her self with is when she's under pressure.
A good example I've found is video game puzzles with time limits.

She goes berserk, not even thinking of the outcome of her actions.
Cursing, Thrashing, Swinging fists ect.
I've walked away with bruises a few times.
Temper tantrums is a good way to put it.

I was wondering if there is any methods anyone could recommend in controlling these tantrums?
I try to calm her down by saying things like "Honey, it's ok, it's ok, it's ok" in a gentle voice, trying to assure her everything is fine, but that won't break the tantrum.

As time goes on, I'm getting a little more and more unable to calmly deal with these things.
There's only so much a person can take, you know?

Methods anyone?

Its not a "tantrum". Its an emotional outburst from bipolar and should be addressed by a psychiatrist. In addition to medication cognitive behavioral therapy works as well. There should be insurance options available that could cover it or clinics that have a sliding scale fee. You could find out more at your local independent living center:
