Question regarding manic episodes

Question regarding manic episodes

My son had a manic episode in 2005 and was on wellbutrin for 6 months. His psychiatrist weaned him off the wellbutrin and discharged him. Four years passed and he did fine. He enrolled in a MBA program last fall and experienced a manic episode. He has been taking lithium for a mood stabilizer and does very well with it. Is it wishful thinking to believe he may never experience another manic episode if he follows his doctors orders and lives a healthy reduced stress life? He is 26 years old.

Sometimes medication can stop working because the person builds up a tolerance to it.  Something as simple as watching a movie can make a person go manic or depressed who has bipolar disorder.  I'd say he did very well to have a track record like you said.  Medication doesn't make symptoms go away entirely.
