Really nervous about thursday

My hearing for Disability is comming up. Its on thursday.
I guess I just wanted to sk if there is any last advice anyone has for the hearing like maybe something I should do while being questioned.....I'm not exactly sure how these things work has anyone on here been through a hearing before?

I've never been through a hearing, but I know a little from paralegal training and writing a couple articles on getting SSDI. So I have a couple questions for you:

1. Do you have representation?

2. What stage are you in? Is this your first application?

3. How long have you been trying to get benefits?

4. Have you had any other interviews, such as a psych evaluation?

5. What has Social Security told you about your claim?

My general advice is to be prepared with documentation (bring in copies of all your paperwork, check stubs, anything you can think of), arrive early, be calm and polite but very clear about your position: that yes, you do have a disability; and yes, it does permanently prevent you from making more than what they call "Substantial Gainful Income."

I agree with the other post. But I would also say that unless its an initial evaluation or reassssment you should not go unrepresented. If its a fair hearing (administrative law judge hearing) before a judge for a Social Security denial you need representation. They can have the judge adjourn the hearing while they prepare you. I put the link to IL centers in enough posts and also there are free legal agencies that could help such as the Legal Aid Society as well. Regardless if its just an initial assessment or reassessment for Social Security benefits that exist or even a hearing strong evidence that is detailed from your psychiatrist is needed. If you don't have that go to a psychiatrist and set up an appointment for that. Regardless as its a form of government benefit you have to tell them the exact truth but emphasize what you can't do and why you cannot work and how your disability impacts on you. If parts of it don't impact on your life you have to tell them that too of course but focus on why you think you are eligible and be detailed but to the point.

I agree with ILADVOCATE, in most caes you should definitely consider representation. In Social Security law, you do not have to be represented by an attorney; you can have representation by a qualified non-lawyer, such as a paralegal who has been trained in this area, or another specialist. This can save you money, compared to a lawyer. Of course, a lawyer is also an option. Either way, make sure you find someone who is not only skilled in the field, but someone you feel like you can trust and talk to.
