Risperidal w/Depekote

My husband has started seeing a psychatrist for his mood swings, we have not been given a diagnosis as of yet...  The psychatrist put him on Risperidal to start with, at 1mg then he bumped it up to 2mg.  With the understanding the he is starting him on a much lower dose than most adult patients, because he wanted my husband to feel comfortable with the medication first. After about a week of 2mg he became increasingly angry and finally violent.  The dr dropped him back to 1.5mg.  Since he started taking the Resperidal his anxiety levels are uncontrolable, the dr didn't want to address the anxiety and still hasn't.  Today he bumped his Resperidal back to 2mg and added Depekote.  I am concerned that this dr isn't listening to our concerns with my husbands violence.  Will the Depekote offset the problems with the Risperidal?  The last violent outburst while on the 2mg was VERY bad and I don't know that I can another one.  Should we get a second opinion?

Its rare for Risperdal to cause angry outbursts and violence as its an antipsychotic first and a mood stabilizer secondly. Sometimes it can cause temporary movement disorders such as akathesia that can cause psychomoter agitation that appears mental. Those can be treated with a side effect pill. Speak to the psychiatrist if that might be the potential cause. If its causing personality changes on its own that is extremely rare. If its not addressing them the Depakoate might help. If its worsening them then the psychiatrist might think of changing it but that particular side effect can be easily addressed. Speak to them more about it and keep track of when it started and at what dose.
