Seroquel XR for Bipolar Disorder

When i was in 7th grade, because of extreme behavioral issues, i was put on Seroquel XR for my newly diagnosed Bipolar disorder at the time. It's been approximately 5 years now since i've started taking it, and i've realized a few things: i gained 80 pounds and it was nearly impossible to lose any of it, even going from a diet of 2-3 packs of cookies a night and no exercise, to rarely small somewhat healthy snacks and exercising occasionally over the course of those 5 years. About a month and a half ago, i suddenly stopped taking Seroquel XR because of intuition and with research i found out that it was the sole cause of my weight gain, not only that, but i was feeling really depressed and hopeless also. Anyways, it's been a month and a half now, and i feel more self confident and social then i have over the 4 years of being on it, but i haven't noticed any change in my weight yet, my psychiatrist said that i will start losing all the weight i've gained on that, but how long will that take? Will exercising and watching what i eat help me lose weight now that i'm off it? I'm just looking for more opinions, people who know of the drug and/or have taken it in the past. Thanks for taking your time to read and respond to this.

I'm sorry but I don't believe that quitiapine or any other meds are the reason ov weight gain.ive been on quitiapine 10 months and I have put on 10 pounds but I'm not over weight and I look the healthiest I have ever looked.the reason being is the meds have calmed the hyper spells down so I'm not burning as Many calories, plus I have an eating disorder but I now have no obsessive thoughts about food and calories so it has allowed me to eat normally like other people do.it can increase yr appetite but instead ov eating biscuits ect, binge on fruit and veg and excersise more.it is all in the way u manage and handle things

seroquel is a nasty drug w.r.t. weight gain; although it was my Godsend for me. i read once that even if you stop it your body metabolism doesn't return to your original state. whether this is true or not you have to give it time to be able to notice a real change. i have gained 60 pounds on it alone although my dose is only 100mg. Apparently it increases the tryglesrides and makes me feeling starved all the time.

give it time

Exercising and watching what you eat should take it off.  Note you have to exercise more than half the week to see results faster.  If you need motivation, look into the exercise classes at the local junior college and take one that fits your schedule!  Hard work and determination and it should work.
