Should Bipolar seek Neurologists help

Should someone who has been diagnosed as bipolar seek help from a neuologist if they are not able to get relief from medication?

My neice has been trying medication after medication for approx 10 years without relief of bipolarism.  The pharmisist list is long.  At some point could there be another avenue to try?  This just isn't working and it's so sad.

Thank you,
Patty

The PET test is the only test that can possibly show in our brain red spots or is it blue. Anyway it is not decisive. A neurologist is good for diagnosing brain cancer or tumors. But since Bipolar is a science left to pharmacology and psychiatry, go to your app't with psych and listen to wht she/he says.

A nuerologist who takes your money for this has no  ethics.

Bipolrar is a chemical disorder of the brain as best we can tell,  it has no neurological symptoms and no brain physical symptoms like lesions - the neuro can't diagnose or fix anything and an ethical one should tell you that upfront.

I think her best step here is get a new doctor  and a second opinion - be aware that some people are drug resistant and for them ECT or shock therapy may work.

Get another psychiatrist and start fresh would be my move.

Bipolar is psychiatric in origin so unless there are over riding concerns that another disability or condition might be the cause a neurologist probably would not be of help. The best thing to do would be to see a trained psychopharmocologist or mood disorders specialist as they are aware of all the updated and innovative treatments currently available.
