Topamax for weight loss

I have gained 25 pounds and counting from the meds. I started out on Risperdal and then was switched to Abilify, which seemed to slow the weight gain down, but I am continuing to gain weight which is very troubling to me.

I have read alot about Topamax and it's weight loss side effect. I wonder if my psych would be willing to prescribe it for me since the weight gain is really putting a damper on my progress as far as happiness goes.

I am just about ready to go off my meds completely just so I can get to where I look and feel normal weight wise.

Yes Topomax (topamax) works on weight loss and is a mood stabilizer as well but before that one essential thing to do would be to consult with a nutritionist to make sure that your diet is healthy as regards sugar and calorie intake. Medications such as antipsychotics can cause metabolic imbalances that lead to weight gain on their own but they also (including some medications I am on now) give people the desire to eat more and often people don't realize it. Some things I do such as when medication gives me a dry mouth drinking water or flavored seltzer water instead of soda make a big difference as well as relocating snacks out of the house and then losing the urge to eat them. But if after all that is said and done you are gaining weight on your own from the medication Topomax (topamax) could be something to ask your psychiatrist about.
