VALIUM AND SUICIDE RISK?

VALIUM AND SUICIDE RISK?

Hi...I can't remember all the reading I've done in the past and will ask a few questions from you people...my knowledge bank!!

My brother in law commited suicide in March...because of many family dynamics I haven't spoken personally to his wife until just now....she is asking many medication questions that I don't want to answer until I confirm a few details for everyone.

BP runs in the family (but its never discussed amoung the brothers)
He was put on Celexa and Diazepam just a few days before commiting suicide....and he wife tells me he was euphoric at night.

I've read that an AD can cause mania in a BP person...also the first week or so after starting it can cause a person to become suicidal....am I right?
What abt when diazepam is also added..does this perhaps even increase the risks?
I don't know the dosage he was taking only that it was 2x a day...obviously not enough since he still couldn't sleep and was euphoric..

can someone familiar with these meds give me some fact please.

"Before taking Valium, tell your doctor if you have glaucoma, asthma or other breathing problems, kidney or liver disease, seizures, or a history of drug or alcohol addiction, mental illness, depression, or suicidal thoughts."
This is from a clinically accurate site but go to the medication website itself or the full prescription insert. SSRI anti-depressents can cause suicidal ideations as an adverse side effect.. I am not sure if there is a direct interaction with Valium. However, if someone has bipolar as you stated clearly an SSRI alone could easily induce mania and Valium can be personality altering and worsen that effect. These are safe medications to take of course but have the potential of these adverse side effects and an anti-depressent alone, especially an SSRI would worsen bipolar. If he was euphoric that may very well have been what happenned. Another doctor independent of the one he saw needs to do a full independent evaluation of what may have happenned.
