Wellbutrin and Celexa

by MaliaGrl09, Feb 03, 2008 12:21AM
My bipolar illness is now stable with 20mg Celexa and 120 mg of Geodon, however my weight is now 131 on a 5'1"-5'2" frame.  I'm especially sensitive to weight gain as I am both a dancer and a swimmer and excess fat has a toll on my performance.  Since my doctor has worked hard to stabilize me with the right combination of medicine because for years I complained about weight gain and was non-compliant in sticking to my medication regimen, I wonder if I should dare to pose the question of adding wellbutrin to my combination of medicine to counteract the weight gain from Celexa.  The last time I talked to him, he wasn't too concerned about it, and I didn't argue because I didn't want to seem vain in pushing him to help me with my weight.  Does anybody have any suggestions for me?  I see him again in about one month.

I take Wellbutrin and celexa with Depakote as my mood stabilizer.  Its working very well for me but I had to add on the celexa VERY slowly to make sure I didn't go manic. I've tried almost every med out there over the past 10 years.  I LOVE celexa and think it's the best a-d for me.  I switched to wellbutrin to quit smoking (which has helped me cut back a lot) but overtime I realised I was getting depressed so my doctpr suggested adding on the celexa.  At first I was very concerned about taking both, but it is working well.  I'm also naturally thin 5'4 and 104lbs... and very sensitive about my weight as well.  I don't know exactly how the meds affect my weight, but I do tend to over eat when I am depressed and I know my meds are working when I'm not craving cookies all the time.  However, I had a friend who gained 40lbs after being on prozac for a couple of years.  So maybe you should evaluate if you are eating more to compensate for something emotionally (obsesing about food) rather than your metabolism slowing down??  Hope that helped!
