well it is usually the other way around.Bi polar comes first and the alchohal and drugs are a way of self medicating,
Unfortunatly untill he comes to grips with his diagnosis, there will little is little you can do
When I went trhough my episode 3 I was givne the choice to get help or else. So I got help.
You will have to firm. you do not have to put up with his behavior. It is hurting you and your family. You have to put yourself first so you are able to care for all the loved ones in your family.
I gotta admit that my family has supported me with my bi polar but they have been firm and loving.Hubby always asks me if I have taken my meds.
you and your family and hubby are in my prayers.
Message me if you need to talk some more.

Namaste,

There's a lot you haven't said in your post, but Verona has it right, it's the bipolar disorder that usually exists before the alcohol and drug use. It's a way to self-medicate, as she said.

Regardless, he needs to see a professional mental health provider who can properly evaluate his individual situation and from there develop an appropriate treatment plan.

I wish you the best of luck and let us know how it goes.

it was only my self diagnosis coz of his reactions, irritable, cant concentrate, jumping from one idea to another ,cant work properly, lavish spending and engaging in extra marital affair. He has history of drug addiction and up to now he is taking marijuana and drinking excessively. Do you think this past history of him had affected his brain? that he suffers from like prsonality disorder

I am not a doc but I am sure it has had an effect on him, As Michael stated he should see a doctor to be evaluated and go from there

I just joined in the convo's, but I really like your advice & opinions. Thanks!
My basically almost whole family are bi-polar/depressed. I have came a long way since I was diagnosed. I can actually SEE the lights if I VERY religiously stay on my meds. No excuses, no wavering.
My daughter was diagnosed this early summer after years of emo. Turmoil. She just turned 16.
Not suree why I wrote, but to say, thanks for the help!

I feel for you. I have an eleven year old who was diagnosed with bi-polar and a husband who (is undiagnosed) exhibits all the symptoms of this disorder. He drinks,or as one might say ...self medicates. What is hard is that his cycles and my son's are usually the same. This makes a very bad combination. Both, when depressed, are extremely agitated and aggressive along with such sadness. my husband thinks psych docs are quacks and refuses to believe that anything is wrong. When he is in a manic mood all is great with the world, he still drinks, but isn't a nasty drunk. With me having health problems of my own makes me want to hide until it is over.
Well anyway, i wanted to extend my support to you cause i live with one.'
