can you reduce / prevent akathisia?

Is it possible to reduce or prevent akathisia by titrating a drug more slowly?

I'd like to start Zyprexa but I'm worried about akathisia.

   The potential of any short term side effect emerging suddenly when a person starts any medication can sometimes be reduced by starting it at a lower titration schedule but its best to discuss the specifics of that with your psychiatrist. As regarding preventing akathesia it is a potential short term side effect of all antipsychotics although less so with the atypical antipsychotics. I do know with many of the antipsychotics I had severe akathesia and with Zyprexa I had far less but each person responds differently to each medication so it would be worthwhile to discuss this concern with your psychiatrist.
