does anyone know about bipolar in children

by hell1971, Sep 23, 2009 08:51PM
My daughter is 9 yrs old and has the classic symptoms of bipolar including dramatic mood swings both up and down, hullicinations and suicidal ideations, she also has some tics. She showed manic syptoms (symptoms) when put on an antidepressent for anxiety and depression including extremely flurtatous behaviour and dangerous behaviour and now off them she is on quitiepine and is in a mixed like state. anyone else have experience with young children with bipolar. My daughter has not been diagnosed as bipolar yet, they have just said they are one step closer to that diagnosis. She is very fragile at the moment and her mood can change dramatically at any point and her doctor cannot see her as he is away sick.

Find out where the tics are from for starters. If she has Tourrette's Syndrome the Catapres application can be used for that and it has a calming effect. I was prescribed it for dystonic spasms and it works as a mood stabilizer and was helpful for many people with Tourrette's Syndrome that I know. I believe it is used in children. The psychiatrist needs to make a conclusive diagnosis first and if the tics started after she took medication he definitely needs to find out if that's the cause.

um diagnosis yes this is what I have been fighting for for years, she has been diagnosed so far as GAD generalised anxiety disorder, gluten intoloerant and now in limbo, they are reluctant to actually diagnose her with anything else. They are in there minds treating the symptoms and as I said they have said they are one step closer to a bipolar diagnoses. Her tics have been long before the meds, she touches herself repeatedly and has a vocal tic of throat clearing, they have said they would have to be much worse than they are to diagnose her with tourettes. She is complex and I can see why it is difficult, I made myself so sick with worry last year and thats how I ended up getting diagnosed with Bipolar, the extremley funny thing about it all was I was telling them she had bipolar and I ended up getting diagnosed with it after I went manic on an antidepressent because I couldnt take it anymore, I was so against medication for her but she was so ill we needed to think about her not coping and against my better judgement they put her on prozac and just like me she went manic, suddenly they started listning to me rather than thinking I was ill and my opinions didnt count. I just want her to be well, its not fair, her illness is stealing her childhood, she has suffered for years.
