inheritance

My boyfriend is bipolar. I was wondering what are the chances of our son inheriting bipolar disorder?

It doesnt scare me. I honestly do not see anything wrong with having a mental disorder or mental disability. It just adds to the uniqueness of each person. I just feel like if there is a chance I would like to know so that I can be prepared so it does not catch me off guard.

I can say this, if my parents had been aware and gotten me help early on, I don't think it would have been such a big deal. Your child has conscious parents who can watch for any signs and support them. I can't tell if my dad is bipolar or not, he is a bad alcoholic/drug addict. I didn't know my grandfather, so I don't know if it runs in my family or not. My son has a learning disability, but I don't think he's bipolar. My daughter hasn't shown any signs either. My son's therapist says that he is doing so well, because we never treated him any different and have supported his needs all his life. So, just love your kid and do what good parents do, give your child whatever they need as they need it. Congrats on the new family member, what a joyous time.

Well seeing as I am 25 weeks pregnant it does not bother me whether or not my son inherits his fathers mental disorders. It is justt that if there is a possibility I would to know. I love my boyfriend regardless of his mental disabilities, which he inherited from his dad, so I would not love my son any less.

There's always a chance as mental illness tends to run in families, but honestly, as someone who has bipolar type 1, I would rather live than my parents have not taken any chances to have me.  You can't say for sure either way.  It can skip generations!  There are risks involved in pregnancy no matter what, but to worry about something that may or may not happen is not going to help matters.
