is it time for a new pdoc?

so I went to see my pdoc yesterday... I had a fight (with hubby) before going and was having a bad day any ways to start, so by the time I arrived I was in tears... my pdoc barely addressed this, still won't give me anti-depressants, and won't get me bloodwork (I'm petrified of my thyroids as problems run in the family)... I'm so peeved!! He says he doesn't want to change my meds if I'm going back to work soon. I'm basically begging to go back to work b/c I can't afford to live like this any more (I get about 50% now)... I believe my depression comes from lack of money so if I'm working again I can afford to buy things again, right? I dunno, I'm so lost right now. I specifically asked for this pdoc b/c when I went to a support group many ppl said he was good. He just doesn't seem to be good for me.... but I doubt there's any other pdoc's taking new patients right now. I feel like I'm at the bottom again trying to climb out of this hole I keep digging myself into. What do I do? and to top it all off, my hubby who has clinical depression (DX's) might have BP instead, according to his mother, sigh... How can 2 ppl with BP deal and live with each other? how do we get through this? wow, I have a lot of questions, sorry. mostly hypothetical, tho, i guess... rambling now

Wow - find a new doc a soon as you can... If your current pdoc isn't an active, willing participant in your treatment, I would leave.... I had a pdoc like that and stopped seeing him after two or three visits, because he wasn't listening to me... That's the most frustrating thing....  You might want to think about getting into therapy to deal with this issues, especially since your husband may, or may not be, BP.  There are ways of dealing with this, but one thing I've learned is that you can't do it alone.... and if you don't have a strong medical staff supporting you, it will just get worse......

Yes I would change psychiatrists. However, the reason they probably won't put you on an anti-depressent is because in someone with bipolar it can make manic episodes worse. As for the thyroid test it depends which medication you mean. That's part of the regular bloodwork for lithium. Other medications it depends. A good psychiatrist should be willing to discuss options regarding medications but sometimes they won't use a particular medication for a valid reason.

Yes time to change - I am changing mine as well due to a lack of care and interest in actually doing anything beyond taking notes (I hate Fruedian psychs)

at least yours take notes, LOL... he always asks me what meds I'm on and what dosage, and the worst part is that he keeps bringing up olanzapine every meeting... I was on it for a while but then my depression got so bad I was hospitalized...

yeah, time for a new pdoc... hope my family doc can refer someone  :S
