Depends on what you've heard that's claimed about meds. For all we know you've heard that they can make you fly and cause you to grow a second head.
Every person reacts differently to every medication. You may have just not responded to the medications that you've tried. New medications are advertised because medications are a for profit venture as well as being designed to help people. This is a list of all available mood stabilizers:

If you haven't responded to one medication ask your psychiatrist about other options.
I know that the medications that will be released in the future will be more effective in general because they more properly target the appropriate receptors in the brain. I know this as well because I am in clinical study for a new generation of antipsychotics that are safer and more efficacious (you can read through my posts).
