seems to be true: generic versus brand name

seems to be true: generic versus brand name

I always wondered about whether a difference exists between the brand name and the generic form of a drug. My body failed to accept lamotrigine for example and wondered had i not taken lamictal say etc... so it seems there is a difference, here it is:

I would say that 95% of the time generic will work the same for people as brand, but that other 5% of the time someone will have a bad reaction due to:
a) other compounds in the generic that are not active ingredients are not good for them
b) placebo effect
c) poor production quality in some way

So, I think just like everything it is a case by case basis.

I often have a problem tolerating generics and have to have my psychiatrist (or other doctor depending on the specific medication) write "dispense as written". Then can vary as regards the inactive ingredients and although very slightly the amount.

I heard generics were more associated with hair loss than brand name psychiatric drugs but if you take a certain supplement you can possibly counteract it.

I take Zyprexa but when the pharmacy was out, they offered me the generic.  Within 3 days, I was back demanding the brand name - I had sleeplessness and a bit of agitation, which got worse over those few days. So yes, in some cases the generic is not quite the same.
My doctor summed it up like this, "When you buy a suit off the rack, it may fit, but then go to a tailor and have a suit made for you.  There's the difference."

I use all generics but have never had the brand names so I have no comparisons. Here our insurance companies only cover generics unless you go through a long drawn out process.
