short concentration span in bipolar

short concentration span in bipolar

My son, 19 yrs, has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder 8 months ago. He was under medication on and off since then. 2 weeks ago he had a relapse and was hospitalized after a depression episode. Now he is doing much better and will leave the hospital soon. I have noticed that his span of concentration is very short. He can focus on a subject for few minutes only. After which, he shifts abruptly to another subject. He someimes asks a question and waits for the answer anxiously, but changes the subject or losses concentration in the middle of the answer ! Is this normal, and how can I increase his concentration span specially that he is joining college within a week or so.

Have you talked to his dr about this?  You didn't say if this is a new problem or an on going one.  Is he in a manic phase when it happens.  New problem, I would guess probably a med.  On going, I would guess ADD.  Manic phase, then it would be totally expected.  Know all about ADD, and this sounds a lot like it.  I suffer from it, too.  I have learned to wait out an answer or finish a sentence before taking off on a new subject, but it's really hard to make myself do that some times.  Of course, if he's ADHD then he changes subjects even faster.

Talk to his dr about it and let them take care of it.  They should know whether it's a med causing it.  Glad your son is getting the help he needs.  Hopefully the meds will work great and he can get on with a normal life.

Thank you very much for your concern, and your answer. He does have less and less concentration during  a phase, but he does have a short span on daily basis.
I will check and learn more about ADD. I will try to do some excercises with him about it, too
Thanx again,
Ashtarout
