should I try to 'go with the flow'

should I try to 'go with the flow'

I get regular mood swings. Quite a few of them are manic. I get about a month or so of each consecutively.
This means during my up swings I start so many projects, go out so often and do things I find very difficult during other times. During my down times I can do virtually nothing but lie in bed (sometimes being promoted to the couch!)
I have been advised to try to 'go with the flow' with some restriction, I want to know if anyone else has or does try this way of dealing with their mood swings. Could I be doing more harm than good? It feels right but you start to loose trust in your own ability to judge good from bad results after a while. Or at least I do....
This advice is to go with the high swings, try to keep physically balanced with correct meals, exercise etc (sleep of course is something I can do little about - I will not take any more drugs to make me sleep). During this high time start all your projects, with the proviso that you write down everything you are doing, why and what you intend to do to finish it. Basically a written plan for my 'high' idea. Then I carry on for as long as the mood strikes me and then when I do cycle down, inevitably, I have a written plan for every idea and project I have started. (In the past, when I went from a 'high' to 'low' state I would forget the details for every idea I had and my time felt wasted..).
When I'm down I pack my projects and ideas away neatly so they don't stare at me and accuse me all the time and when I feel a surge of energy or the ability to even face them then I break them out and attempt them again.
This I have been trying for around two months, and I have been able to finish some projects, not many but I am hoping that the amount will improve.
Does anyone else try this method, or have any suggestions on how to do this in a better and more efficient way. I am on meds (tried everything, barely stable) but still get so many mood swings that I need some kind of plan of how to live life despite these things happening. Any ideas anyone.....

I don't know at least for myself because during manic episodes I lose judgment and can't concentrate so I am not sure what the results will be afterwards. I try to plan any ideas I need in advance and to minimize manic episodes to begin with and take caution when they occur as sometimes (at least for me) my reality testing begins to drop.
