trigger for manic behavoiur

My husband has been diagnosed w/bipolar. Drs 1st gave him resperydahl, than another Dr put him on Geodone because he has Hep C. Will he have to take something for the rest of his life? He keeps going off the Geodone cause it is so expensive...$450/month. He is also tapering off xanex, would that trigger the manic episode he is in now? He's been manic for almost 3 weeks now!! He started taking Geodine again about 2 weeks ago, why is it taking so long to work?

Both of those medications are antipsychotics. Not mood stabilizers. Is he on anything else?

Yeah, it sounds like he is in desparate need for a mood stabilizer. I'm surprised that the doc has let him go thus long being manic. Does the doc know? Being manic messes the chemistry of the brain up and the longer one stays manic the more out of balance things in the mind become. There also might be the problem where he wants to stay manic. That's another kind of problem but either way it sounds like the doc should really be stepping in there...like now.
