CBT is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. DBT is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
They are both good kinds of Therapy. See which one you respond to better. Their great for helping with Bipolar. You have to find a Therapist that actually specializes in either one of these. I have done both myself. The tools are invaluable. Give one a try.

We all go thru episodes even on meds, some worse than others. I know it makes life really hard. Sometimes things are going relatively smooth and than BAM, here comes another episode. The Therapy does help though! Talking to people you feel safe with is important too!

I experience the same. I (will probably get lots of opposition on this) believe that (at least for me) the meds actually make my episodes nor frequent. I'm so far from a base line I dont know how I would even know. You can try the med changes, I know they can be helpful. I am thinking I will go off of everything again and start from there after 16 years of treatment. I'm sorry it ***** so bad for you, and all of us. I agree with the umbrella idea too, and think that meds so or dont work based on wherever the actual brain issue is. If only they would allow brain scans and much deeper research to treat rather than, here, try this one out!

Bipolar since infancy? Among the bipolar people I have encountered actually a bit like they are suspended in time. At varying ages. Sometimes infantile in ways. I stay suspended in this otherworldly enigma. I dont know...what i know of bipolar disorder, from FMRI scans..it is the sudden increase and decrease of activity in the brain. Ive heard of many people having episodes on their medication. I mean, its nothing is 100% affective. Honestly i think bipolar is an umbrella term for this incredible plethora of neuological anomaly. No one will understand the neuroatypicals. Maybe we'll ascend to a higher state of conciousness. Also dont take anything for granted. I know its really ******* hard but I try my damndest. I have no support system, no family, and no friends at the moment.... I have my girlfriend but i dont want to burden her with anything. She is still at an age/stage where i wouldnt put her in a position to understand this. What i mean to say is if you have someone, talk to them even if its hard. It might put things into perspective a little better.

thank you both very much....may be a silly question but what is DBT and CBT. ive been bipolar since infancy, diagnosed 8 years ago but i cant say ive ever heard of that...i had a Councillor and recently applied for another one. also my doctor messed up on my medication (hes no mental health expert). that really messed me up, im not the kind of person to ask for help, and usually do well on my own but right now feels like a never ending cycle. i dont want to go back to where i was. arge this illness feels like it controls me at times....

I understand how you feel and I wonder the sae thing sometimes.  Even at my best times with plenty of support and medications I can still have moments when I have breakthroughs of intense mood swings along with panic attacks that cause suicidal thoughts.
We are very complicated beings and one of my main interests in life is understanding bipolar and the human mind.
I agree with thatgirl fully.  The treatment progresses like the disease does and we have to be willing to keep our emotional maintanence a top priority in our life.
Most people start out with some medication and therapy.  Eventually it leads into CBT and thought stopping and DBT to learn how to better understand your behaviors.  I have been through all of it and I do say that I manage mine mostly on my own now but I do seea therapist and practice CBT, journaling, and a healty life style (the best I can) but I know that ne day I will be back in the hospital.  Over the last 4 years I have been in the hospital 11 times and it usually occurs between Nov and Jan then from Aug to Sep.  For the most part it is about every 6 months but the good thing about it is that I only stay for days now instead of months.  I was only in for 2 weeks last time which was in January.
If you have any more questions or would like to learn about CBT just ask another question and someone will help.  I don't get on here as much as I used to but if I come on and see your post I promise I will try to help.

You may need a medication adjustment.  Definitely schedule an appointment with your psychiatrist to have that evaluated.

Unfortunately, that's how this illness works: ups, downs, normal, rinse, repeat.  I was stable for a few years with minor ups and downs but recently have begun a major episode.  It's discouraging; it really is.  You are not alone in this experience.

I strongly encourage therapy in addition to meds with someone who specializes in DBT, if you aren't already.  It's such a help to recognize your triggers and how to deal with/address symptoms when you start to see them before it can get worse.
