withdrawing from depakote

withdrawing from depakote

Need input on coming off depakote. Currently taking 750 mg x 3 daily. I USED to have seizures due to a stroke, but I have been seizure free for a year. I am on 30 mg of abilify & 200 mg of lamictal. I want to come off the depakote due to weight gain & memory loss/confusion. My Neurologist has given her approval, but I do not want a manic episode at all. Can you help?

Hi,  I came off depakote at the beginning of the year.  You need to reduce the amounts quite slowly.  I had to reduce by 250mg every 4 weeks until I stopped.  I found that I got very bad migraines and dizzy spells so don't surprised if you get these.

If you get at all worried I suggest you contact a doctor.

I agree.  the abilify and lamictal should control the manic episodes for you.  I too was on depakote and hated the weight gain and confusion -- and it was a very gradual process to decrease the dosage (with my doc's help) until I was finally able to get off it.

I am now on lamictal 200mg and lexapro 20mg.

Yeah, it seems like you might have been over-consuming; 750 is a grip, and to just stop...try it and see...but do theropy. I quit, but started drink a week or so later. still super negative, i'm losing all so called friends....
