Cockateil with club foot

can you tell me if there is anything i can do to fix this. Or is there any special things i need to be doing. thanks gail the bird is about 4 to 6 months old.

It depends on the cause. If it's a tendon issue and the foot is knuckling (toes curled under) then it can be splinted into an open position for about a week. That usually does the trick. I have to do that quite often with young birds that come into the center.

If it's due to poor diet and metabolic bone disease and the bones themselves are deformed, that's a different story. Splinting may not help and the foot may never be normal. Is the bird able to perch?

We had a couple of young Kestrals come in with MBD because some person took them and wanted to raise them as pets. The diet was so calcium poor both birds were in terrible shape. The little male had deformed legs and couldn't stand at all. He had to be euthanized. The female's jaw was so weak it fractured and she couldn't eat. It took months but it finally strengthened enough that she can now eat on her own but she can never close her beak properly.

Anyway, just a side story there. Check with a vet to see what's going on and what can be done.

Thankyou so much we will take her to the vet. In answer to your question no the bird is not perching. But we can move her toes out to normal position and clean them although this does give her alittle discomfort. will see what the vet says, and again thankyou

Actually, that's encouraging that you can move the toes. It sounds like the tendons have tightened up and will have to be stretched with a ball wrap or splint. I sent you a message too. Good luck.
