Male Eclectus thrashing about

I have a male eclectus that has been a feather chewer since before I took him in.  He has been otherwise healthy, but has never played with toys, only eats at night, and is not sociable.  Lately, he has refused to come out of his cage, even though the door was always open during the day.  Now, he totally freaks out if the door is open.  Even with the door closed, he will screech, leap from his perch, land HARD on the bottom of the cage, and screech all the way up the side back to his perch, only to do it all over again. This has been going on for 3 days now.  I am at my wits end, knowing what to do to calm him down. Nothing has changed in their environment.  I had big potted plants next to his cage.  They seemed to calm him for several months.  Now I have pulled them back, in case that is the problem, but has not helped.  I am truly afraid he is going to kill himself doing this.  Is there any help for him?

hi mel,

I have an RS male and female eclectus.    I wonder if moving the plants away from his cage has upset him.    I know my female bird does not tolerate change very well.    However, my male bird doesn't seem bothered by it.    The plant may have served as some sort of "protection" in his mind.   Also, as far as the toys go, I wonder if you just haven't found the right type yet.    For example, my male loves anything with a bell on it.     He rings bells all day long.    My female could care less about the bells but she like to shred paper.    I believe in her mind, she is preening the paper toys.     If his behavior continues like this, you may want to take him to a vet just to see that he does not have some sort of chemical inbalance.    Atleast, you cold rule that out.     There is a website out there, wwwlandofvos.com for people with Eclectus parrots.    It has all sorts of useful information as well as a question / comment board that you can post to.    Good luck.    Believe me, I know their personalities can be challenging at times.

Hi
Thanks for your reply.  I actually had placed the plants by his cage several months ago, for the very reason you mentioned - a feeling of protection for him.  He was fine with them for a long time.  I only moved them after he started freaking out.  I have moved one back closer to the cage, but he stills does the frantic diving off his pearch to the bottom of the cage. I have thought of the vet, but I will have to find one to come to me.  I am afraid he would die of a heart attach due to the stress of the small cage and transport.
Thanks for the land of vos website info.  Great site.
Thanks again
Mel
