Birth control options?????

Birth control options?????

I am 22 yrs old. About 8 months ago my sisters and I were diagnosed with Leiden Factor V after my younger sister ended up in the ER with blood clots in her lungs. All 3 of us females were on birth control pills (Yasmine) and we directed to immediately stop taking them due to their increase in causing blood clots. I was told that I have heterozygotic Leiden Factor V, I have tried to see a specialist about birth control options but they rescheduled my appointment twice so I got fed up. Any advice as to what my options are for birth control?? Thanks

Hello,
Thanks for writing in this forum. Factor V Leiden thrombophilia is an inherited disorder of blood clotting. Using birth control pills especially estrogen pills increases the chances of blood clotting more because of thrombus and emboli formation.

The best birth control measures for you are intrauterine devices (IUD’s) like copper T and condoms. This is inserted through the cervix, into the uterus. Once there, it changes the uterine lining, using copper ions released, in order to prevent pregnancy, and is effective anywhere from one to twelve years.

The other best method is condom used during intercourse. Not only do they prevent pregnancy they also prevent transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. Even spermicidal jellies can be used with condoms which prevent pregnancy.

Please discuss the above stated methods with a gynecologist and choose an option best suited for you after discussion.

I hope it helps. Take care and please do keep me posted in case you have any additional doubts. Kind regards.
