Depo and pregnancy

by kaz895, Nov 09, 2009 06:46AM
I had my first depo injection when I was 15 (not as BC but to control very heavy and painful periods). My first injection was given one day before I was due to come on, and the doctor said that I would probably still get this period, but ones after this would not be as heavy/wouldn't appear at all (at 15 I thought this was great having had heavy/painful periods since i was 10! however he forgot to mention the long term fertility problems associated with depo!!)...anyway, I never got that first period, and I've never had one since..no spotting or anything.
I absolutely loved depo- I never had any of the side affects that most people get, and it just generally worked well for me.
Now I am 20, married to my childhood sweetheart and we are ttc. When we first started discussing this, I researched 'coming off depo' on the internet, only then did I realise how long it could take us to get pregnant! I decided to come off depo there and then...with the idea that it could take us up to 2 years to conceive. I had my last injection 15th May this year, meaning that I should have gone back for my next one August this year. Although I didn't get the injection, I did go back to see my doctor just to generally discuss what we should do next. Apart from taking folic acid, she didn't really have any other advice for me, and sent me on my way saying that I would probably get my period in about 1 month.
So far it has been 3 months since my last injection was due and still no period! I know this doesn't seem very long to those people who have been waiting years to conceive, but it's really started to get me down-I feel like I'm not functioning properly as a woman!
As I mentioned before, when I was on depo, I had none of the nasty side affects that others have mentioned, however coming off it has been an absolute nightmare! My breasts have been so tender I've woken up in the night crying from the pain (luckily this has now subsided), I've had stomach cramps, and the worst moodswings I've ever experienced - I can be fine one minute, and then literally just turn into either a sopping mess or a woman possessed the next!
Obviously with my lack of periods, I'm not able to chart when I should be ovulating, and so don't really know when to take pregnancy tests (I know it would probably be rare to get caught on my first ovulation before I even have a period, but there's just always that bit of hope there).
Then, on Friday, I spent the day with one of my friends who I haven't seen for quite a while just chatting and catching up, and it just so happened that she was on her period. We joked that maybe with her hormones flying around everywhere it would set me off with my period, but by the time she was leaving I was seriously having what felt like period cramps in my lower abdomen. When I went to the toilet and wiped myself, there was thick, stringy/sticky cm. However, where before it has been clear/cloudy, it was tinged very slightly pink/brown. I thought I was finally going to get my period, and I'd be able to get on track with charting and ttc....still no period! The cramps subsided after a few hours, and i've just been left will a dull ache. When no period turned up over this last weekend, I once again logged on to the internet to try and find out what the pink/brown cm could have meant, and it came up with early sign of implantation - I've not had any actual bleeding so I'm unsure whether this is what it was. It was only on the tissue twice when I went to the toilet that friday night, and since then has returned to being clear/cloudy.
I'm now sat here wondering if, by some miracle, I could be pregnant! So I've got a few questions:
If this was some sort of implantation cm when is the best time to take a pregnancy test?
If it turns out I'm not pregnant, what was everyone else's experience with depo? (I've read a lot of the 'it took me 2 years to conceive' ones, and just wanted to see if there were many positive stories from woman who have managed to conceive a lot quicker).
Is there anything I can take to bring back my fertility and periods quicker?
Has anyone heard of/experienced anything similar with regards the cm?

I look forward to hearing everyone's experiences on this.
Thanks in advance :)
